About
Who am I?
I’m a backend developer who’s been writing Java for decades and Kotlin for years — long enough to appreciate the tradeoffs and long enough to have some strong opinions.
I created this blog to share practical insights about building reliable backend systems using Kotlin, Spring Boot, Reactor, and other tools I work with daily. This isn’t a beginner’s tutorial site — it’s a collection of patterns, experiments, and lessons that actually matter in production.
I also work as a manager and an agile developer, usually in small companies. That means a mix of leadership, hands‑on building, and a steady requirement to stay versatile while exploring new ideas and technologies.
You’ll also see a series on building a simple business website from an idea to early signal. It’s written for developers who want a pragmatic path that avoids overbuilding and keeps momentum.
I publish under the name Red Mug Guy. It keeps the focus on the ideas, not the credentials — though if you’re wondering, I’ve spent most of my career in tech, leading backend projects, mentoring engineers, and sweating the details that most people don’t see until things go sideways.

Why the red mug?
It’s on my desk. Every day. Usually filled with something caffeinated.
